Fireproof System FIX-M
Description of the system

Fireproof system FIX-M consists of:

  • Basalt material based on fabric made of basalt ultrathin fiber of special purpose;
  • Glue on the basis of inorganic binder.

Fireproof system FIX-M is mounted of the basalt material with nominal thickness 5mm with the thickness of glue application – 1,47. System corresponds to the fireproof class EL 60 according to USS (Ukrainian State Standard) B 1.1-4.

Basalt material is produced according to Technical Specifications ÒÓ Ó Â2.7-23.9-00292818-002 and can be done:

  • With one-side aluminum foil covering;
  • Without covering.

Basalt material must be of the same thickness, surfaces should not have any defects such as exfoliation, cuts or holes.

In the manufacture of the fireproof system FIX-M 150, the first layer of material is uncoated, and the outer layer with or without a coating of aluminum foil.

Operating conditions of fireproof system:

Fireproof system can be operated in heated and non-heated premises or under shed, avoiding direct hit of atmospheric precipitation.

Serviceability of the fireproof system FIX, if follow operating technology, is not less than 10 years.

1. Surface preparation

Installation of the fireproof system FIX-M on the steel air ducts involves thorough pasting of the whole area with basalt material. Basalt material is applied on the isolated surface overlapping the ends.

Making of fireproof coverings starts with preparation of protected surface. Steel elements, on which fireproof system FIX-M is installed must be:

  • Dry;
  • Clean from inorganic impurity (cement, lime, clay etc.);
  • Clean from oil and other impurities (including paint), if needed elements can be cleaned (degreased) with alcohol or another dissolving agent. Liquid alkaline detergent also can be used.

2. Gluing

Before application glue is stirred mechanically.

Glue is applied with palette knife, evenly on the whole surface which is to be protected.

While gluing basalt material the joint sections of air duct are glued first, then areas which are left considering overlapping (pic.1). High level of adhesion of the glue to the metal surface provides secure chemical protection of the steel surface from the rust and does not require application of additional rust-resistant coverings.

Example of fire-proof protection of air-duct with circular section provided on the pic.2.

3. Cutting of the material and application of insulation on the air-duct
Basalt material is cut considering overlapping (lap) 50…100 mm (size a, picture 1). To glue the joint sections of the air duct stripes are cut with width necessary for gluing of the junction and surface of the air duct at the distance 50…100 mm from the junction (size b, picture 1).
4. Sizing of the junctions with aluminum tape if needed

During the gripping period, parts which are under risk of unsticking of protective covering from the construction can be additionally reinforced with the band with polymeric sealing tape. After the gripping of the glue, the band can be removed.

Quality control of fireproof coverings is carried out visually. The surface must be smooth, fully covered with fireproof system, without gars, mechanical failures, splits and scorings of the edges. Junctions of the fireproof material must be entirely filled with glue. Exfoliation of the cardboard at the junctions is inadmissible.
